"This book grew from a simple and surprising fact: 16mm has been with us now for over a hundred years. The centenary of this film format offered a stark reminder: given the complexity and the widespread influence of this uniquely important film format, it would take many people working across professional and research spheres to do justice to its often curious and significant legacies. Happily, a rapidly growing cadre of scholars, archivists, librarians and collectors has been working hard over the last several years to assemble resources, screen films, and most of all catalyze discussions and debates. It from this inspiring group of people and their commitments that this book has grown. There have already been several journal issues devoted to reconsidering 16mm. We thank the Journal of Cinema and Media Studies (Winter 2023), the Canadian Journal of Film Studies (Fall 2022), and The Moving Image (Fall 2023) for helping to further our knowledge of, and engagement with, the specificities of this essential film format.
