This edited collection provides anthropological case studies of contemporary chronopolitics, and explores the different facets of the multiple temporalities at play in scientific discourses, governmental techniques and policy practices through which modern life is shaped. The contributors discuss state power, citizenship, and ecologies of time to bring together a broad but focused view of the scalar properties of chronopolitics, from the everyday to the macro-institutional work of nation states. Together the essays highlight the importance of chronopolitical research for the future of anthropological work. Using questions raised as part of the Enlightenment movement, this volume is structured around some of the key themes the Enlightenment fostered, including human nature, time, earth and the cosmos, beauty, order, harmony and design, and moral sentiments. The volume focuses in particular on how 'moral sentiment' offered a guiding idea in Enlightenment thought, and the idea of it is central to the essays' grappling with the ethical anxieties of contemporary anthropology. With an Afterword from Marilyn Strathern, this volume will be a strong addition to the ASA conference proceedings.
