Common condiments became tools of racial harassment during the "sit-in movement" that started in 1960, as four black college students in Greensboro, North Carolina protested segregation in public spaces by sitting at a whites-only lunch counter of a local store. Denied service, they quietly remained in their seats until the store closed that day. Soon the movement spread across the South where thousands of students and activists would join this nonviolent act of defiance. The rules of the sit-in movement were "simple": no matter what they do, no matter what they say, remain calm and peaceful. Whenever protestors were hauled away by police, or injured so badly they could not continue, others would take their place.
