It introduces the book's key argument, that social media platforms can be a valuable space for young people to experiment with their political voice and to hone it through interaction with others, and as a window into some of the crucial political and social concerns on the mind of young people. However, as the chapter argues, seriously considering social media as a space for youth political expression necessitates putting aside dominant normative expectations about the forms that political expression should take. Instead, the aim should be to understand the varied and creative styles of political expression that young people employ, before assessing them vis-à-vis normative models.
